According to Sliema Wanderers president Steve Abela, Simon Agius the first choice goalkeeper of the Blues last season, is a liar. The Sliema President made this statement during a press conference to launch the new squad for the 2010/11 season when he was asked about the developments of the alleged corruption case involving some Sliema players. These allegations were being made in relation to a Uefa Europa League decider between Sliema and Qormi that was played at the end of last season.

Abela said that the judicial protest which Simon Agius had filed in court was full of lies and unfounded allegations and he was therefore going to present a counter judicial protest in court in the coming days to rebut the goalkeeper’s allegations. Agius had in fact stated that he was threatened.

Steve Abela also remarked that it was not true that he or any of his committee members had asked Agius to meet up late in the night on the eve of the Qormi match. On the other hand it was the player who approached coach Mark Marlow to voice his concern about some statements that were made by Abela during a meeting with all the players and the technical staff. It is believed that Abela during this collective meeting urged all the players for a full extra commitment and while encouraging the players, he also pressured them to win the important decider in view of the financial situation of the club ahead of the 2010/11 season.

Abela had then met the goalkeeper in the presence of coach Marlow and another high Sliema official. Simon Agius that night had packed up his belongings and drove back home from the hotel that the Sliema players were staying in. The club had eventually asked the player to appear in front of the Sliema Wanderers Disciplinary Board to take the necessary actions. Close sources to the club said that Agius might be disciplined by holding least two month’s worth of wages.

Simon Agius who started his pre-season training with Floriana FC was not in the Greens’ squad  during n a friendly match played against Hamrun. The game ended in a 0-0 draw. In another friendly Hibernians beat Vittoriosa Stars to the tune of 2 goals to 1.

In the meantime this website has received the below statement from Simon Aguis which we are publishing intact:

“Wara l-kumment malafamanti magħmul minn Steve Abela (President ta’ Sliema Wanderers Football Club) fil-konfront tiegħi waqt il-press conference tat-30 ta’ Lulju 2010, nixtieq niddikjara illi ser nieħu parir legali dwar l-istess kummenti filwaqt illi diga’ għamilt rapport ma’ l-MFA dwar dan l-aġir.  F’ dan l-istadju, dejjem bil-permess ta’ l-MFA, qiegħed nirriżerva illi nieħu kull azzjoni legali kontra l-istess Steve Abela għal malafam” – Simon Agius
